  10.    PURPOSE:
  11.  
  12.    Many companies are supplying Personal Computers to their employees on
  13.    a need basis but have no real means of monitoring that need to
  14.    determine if a particular computer placement continues to be
  15.    justified. PCMonitor was written as a special purpose utility
  16.    designed to quietly survey that need. What PCMonitor does is simply
  17.    count key strokes quietly in the background and occasionally, when
  18.    it's safe to do so, writes it acquired information to a small data
  19.    file with virtually no detectable interruption of DOS or runtime
  20.    activity. Because PCMonitor records only the number of key strokes
  21.    during the operational cycle of a PC it cannot be defined as an
  22.    invasion of employee privacy or a security risk to the company using
  23.    the utility. A more complete technical explanation of how PCMonitor
  24.    operates follows in the next few paragraphs.

  26.    Using PCMonitor effectively is easy. In fact, it is so intuitive that
  27.    as you are reading this you are probably thinking of ways to put PC
  28.    Monitor to work. Even if you have no existing track record of
  29.    activity it is very easy to develop a base line. Simple install
  30.    PCMonitor at several productive PC locations to get a "reading" of
  31.    average key board activity at say a "word processor" location, an
  32.    "accounting" location, a "CAD" location, etc etc. Soon, you will have
  33.    a base line to compare against any other work stations that you are
  34.    responsible for placing and maintaining. The methods to use PC
  35.    Monitor are endless!

  40.    PCMonitor is being released now as shareware. You are permitted to
  41.    try this product for a period of ten days. If after that time you
  42.    wish to continue using this utility, payment is required. Single PC
  43.    registration is $19.00. Site licenses are available for multiple
  44.    installations. See details below or contact our office for additional
  45.    licensing information.

  47.    PCM.COM was written entirely in machine language and is designed to
  48.    work on any IBM or close clone running DOS ver 2.01 or later. It has
  49.    been tested thoroughly on numerous clones running both PC, DR and
  50.    MS-DOS.

  60.    PCM.COM is a very powerful TSR that is completely bullet proof and
  61.    transparent to both the operating system as well as any application
  62.    software. PCM watches 7 different dos interrupts to determine how
  63.    safe it is to popup before chancing any possibilities of system
  64.    crashes due to vector conflicts. To keep dos i/o activity to a bare
  65.    minimum when PCMonitor does activate, PCMonitor only writes one byte
  66.    to its data file and then only after accumulating 256 keystroke
  67.    counts in its buffer. There should be no perceptible delay in
  68.    operating characteristics of any runtime software.

  70.    The data file created by PCMonitor consist of a hidden dos random
  71.    access file of 372 records, each 3 bytes in length for a maximum file
  72.    size of 1116 bytes. The system date controls the record pointer
  73.    through the formula Rec#=(((Mo-1)*31)+Day). This insures that each
  74.    day of operation has a separate unique record. The first byte is
  75.    reserved, with the second and third containing the keystroke count.
  76.    This combination allows the count to exceed 16 million, a number we
  77.    doubt will ever be exceeded in one day. A simple utility file
  78.    (READMDAT.EXE) is included to convert the binary data of each record
  79.    selected into formatted numerical output. This data is directed to
  80.    your console screen. With registration, you will receive another
  81.    utility (SHOWMDAT.EXE) which gives a breakdown for any entire month
  82.    that you select.

  84.    The TRS is designed to be as rugged as possible and is able to
  85.    recover from unexpected power downs by always restarting where it
  86.    left off. It is even capable of recreating its data file while
  87.    resident, should a user somehow delete it by mistake, error or
  88.    accident. PCMonitor is intended to be called from the autoexec.bat at
  89.    bootup and can be placed in any directory to which there is a dos
  90.    path. PCMonitor will ALWAYS put its hidden data file in the root of
  91.    drive "C". Likewise, READMDAT.EXE will also look only in the root for
  92.    PCM.DAT and therefor it too can be used anywhere on your drive system
  93.    and called via an active dos path. If you want to load PCM in STEALTH
  94.    mode where it will display no messages on loading, simply send the
  95.    screen messages to nul. i.e. in your command line of autoexec say:

  98.    PCMonitor monitors ANY activity at the KeyBoard console, including
  99.    cursor movement keys. DOS Interrupt 9 as well as Interrupt 21,
  100.    function 0A is used for those purposes. The source code for PCMonitor
  101.    is available for inspection by registered corporate users if required
  102.    and is also available for sale.

  140.    resolve any software bugs in a timely manner and I am always open to

  144.    NonRegistered Users: I will attempt to respond to software trouble
  145.    reports made by non-registered users if the problems concern the
  146.    general functionality of the program.  Such users should not,
  147.    however, expect product support beyond initial aid in determining
  148.    whether the program is suitable for their needs.

  150.    IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM:  I ask that, before calling or writing, you
  151.    take the following steps:

  153.    Read the documentation.  We all sometimes approach a piece of
  154.    software with preconceived ideas about how it should work which may
  155.    not correspond to how it actually does work.  (Of course, I'm
  156.    interested in your input if you have this sort of experience.)

  158.    If you're still having problems, please make a note of your PC
  159.    hardware (processor, memory on board, drives etc) the operating
  160.    system software and version number. Finally, try to provide the
  161.    sequence of actions which lead to the error.  If I can't reproduce
  162.    the problem, it will be very difficult to correct, so your help is
  163.    vital in isolating the problem. If you follow these steps, it will
  164.    help me to solve your problem in the most efficient and timely
  165.    manner.

  187.    The above schedule means that the first copy is $19, the 2nd through
  188.    5th copies are $15, and so forth.  (The exception is the Unlimited
  189.    License, which represents the Total license cost for any number of
  190.    same company and or corporate site installations.)  This Unlimited
  191.    License shall include customers or vendors who deal direct with the
  192.    licensed corporation as long as they are so involved. The Unlimited
  193.    License shall not be deemed to convey any authority or licensing to
  194.    resell, wholesale or retail PC Monitor Software to other companies,
  195.    corporations or individuals.

  198.    government agencies.  I'd like to see you on that list!

  201.                            Upgrade Policies

  204.    There are no upgrade charges presently associated with PC Monitor and
  205.    I do not have any plans at present to institute such charges with
  206.    future revisions.  I do reserve the right to change this policy
  207.    however, if in my sole opinion the nature and magnitude of PC Monitor
  208.    changes to such a degree as to constitute a substantially new
  209.    product. For users unable to obtain access to current versions of PC
  210.    Monitor via the electronic bulletin boards (my normal means of
  211.    distribution), I currently charge a nominal fee of Five Dollars for
  212.    supplying upgrades or current releases on diskette. On original
  213.    registrations, the shipping and handling fee for the most current
  214.    release on diskette is only One Dollar. I plan to continue this
  215.    practice for the foreseeable future. This upgrade disk fee is subject
  216.    to change without notice, however, to accommodate postage, printing,
  217.    and other price increases.
